Settling in: a guide for first-time parents

The week before

The first morning
Arrive a little early, stay calm, and say a short goodbye with a clear "I'll come back after stories." Then leave, even if there are tears.
The first two weeks
Expect ups and downs. Some children cry later, once the novelty wears off. Be on time for pick-up; it builds trust.
At home
Keep evenings quiet and bedtimes early. Ask what they played with or who they sat next to.
If it still feels hard
If your child is still very upset after three or four weeks, ask the teacher for a short chat about what might help.
